Objective: Dribble while walking and avoiding objects

Hockey Unit | Level 6

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to dribble while walking and avoiding objects.

IMPORTANCE
Dribbling while walking and avoiding objects is important because it reinforces the skills needed to dribble around defenders.

VOCABULARY
Dribble:
to advance a ball or puck by giving it a series of short pushes.

When dribbling while walking and avoiding objects, it is important to:

1. Bend your knees and lean forward.

2. Keep the ball close to your body.

3. Use both sides of the hockey stick to control the ball.

PRACTICE

  1. Move onto skills game- Color Run II. 

COLOR RUN II

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
25 tall cones (5 red, 5 yellow, 5 blue, 5 green, 5 orange)
1 hockey stick per student
1 Wiffle ball per student
Optional: 10 beanbags, 10 dots

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Color Run II. Your goal is to dribble while walking and avoiding objects to the correct color cone.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your hockey stick and ball. 
  • When I say a color, dribble to that color and back to the baseline.
  • Try your best to stay in one lane when dribbling back and forth.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Call out various colors.
Game 2: Call out fruits or vegetables. Students have to run to whatever color the fruit or vegetable is.
Game 3: Call out articles of clothing that specific students are wearing (ex. “Dribble to the color of Susie’s shirt”).
Game 4: Call out objects in the immediate area (ex. “Dribble to the color of the sign in the corner”).
Game 5: Choose different students to call out a color.
Game 6: Set a time limit all students must be back at the baseline by. Count down aloud the time so students are aware.
Variation: Add beanbags or dots students have to avoid while dribbling.
Exit Ticket: Teacher lays out cones and students dribble while walking and avoiding the cones as they go to put their hockey stick and ball away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Ask students to place their ball between their feet when they get back to the baseline to indicate that they are ready for the next game.
    • Try and trick students by calling out colors that are not on the field.
  • Safety:
    • Remind children to dribble with their heads up. Focus on not bumping into others when dribbling.  
  • ELL Accommodation: 
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation: 
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications. 
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection: 
    • When dribbling, keep the ball __________ to your body.

LANDING ZONE II

1 Wiffle ball per student
2 tall orange cones
10 short cones
20 tall cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Landing Zone II. Your goal is to dribble while walking and avoiding objects to land your airplane (Wiffle ball) safely in the end zone.   

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your hockey stick and airplane.
  • I will begin as the air traffic controller.
  • When I say, "GO!" the air traffic controller will hold up two orange cones, which will signal where to land your airplane.
    • Cones pointing left (move left)
    • Cones pointing right (move right)
    • Cones pointing forward (move forward)
    • Cones pointing backward (move backward)
    • Cones making a circle (spin in a circle with your ball)
    • One cone (try dribbling with one hand)
    • Cones going up and down (turbulence – jump with your hockey stick up and down)
    • Cones stopped (pause)
  • We will begin a new game once all airplanes have safely reached the end zone.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Put 20 tall cones (luggage) in the field. Luggage has fallen out of the airplanes and landed on the tarmac. Students must avoid hitting the luggage when landing their plane.
Game 3: Have a student be the air traffic controller.
Exit Ticket: Teacher lays out cones and students dribble while walking and avoiding the cones as they go to put their hockey stick and ball away.

HOCKEY COUNTING II

6 hula-hoops

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Hockey Counting II. Your goal is to dribble while walking and avoiding objects and listen to the assigned movements. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, spread out onto the field with your ball and stick so that you are at least an arm’s distance away from the student next to you.
  • When I say, “GO!” begin moving your ball from right to left while standing still. When I say these numbers, you must do the assigned move:
    • “One on your bum” (sit down with your bottom on the ground and freeze)
    • “Two on your shoe” (move the ball back and forth while on your tippy toes)
    • “Three on your knee” (kneel on the ground and move the ball back and forth)
    • “Four on the floor” (lay down with your back touching the floor/ground)
    • “Five staying alive” (dance pose from the song “Staying Alive”)
    •  “Six pick up sticks” (switch sticks with any student)
    • “Seven heaven” (point up to the sky with your stick)
    • “Eight straight” (freeze making your body straight like a guard at Buckingham Palace)
    •  “Nine grind” (move your ball quickly back and forth at a faster speed)
    • “Ten all over again”
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add short cones, tall cones and hula-hoops as obstacles students have to dribble around.
Exit Ticket: Teacher lays out cones and students dribble while walking and avoiding the cones as they go to put their hockey stick and ball away.
