ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Objective: Backhand shot off the dribble

Hockey Unit | Level 27

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to backhand shoot off the dribble.

IMPORTANCE
A backhand shot off the dribble is important because it improves your ability to strike the ball accurately and is necessary when a defender is pressuring you. A backhand shot can be used when you are close to the net or is coming from behind the net.

VOCABULARY
Backhand shot:
a shot taken from the backside of the blade.

When backhand shooting off the dribble, it is important to:

1. Start with your body sideways to your target (dominant shoulder in the front).

2. Step towards your target as you push the ball forward with the back of the blade.

3. Follow through towards your target.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide you into two groups. Line up single file behind your group's marker cone. When I say, "GO!" the first person in line will dribble and then backhand shoot on goal. Once the person in front has shot, the next person in line can go. After you have shot, retrieve your ball and return to the back of your line. We will stop after each person has made at least one shot on goal.

ON GUARD

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 hockey stick per student
1 Wiffle Ball per student
1 flag per 2 students
1 hula-hoop
10 short cones

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing On Guard. In this game, the objective is to backhand shoot off the dribble into the goal while the guard is not looking.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams (guards and shooters) – using flags to tell who you are.
  • Before the game begins, the guards will line up behind a goal located on the edge of the field.
  • Shooters will begin in the center circle.
  • When I say, "GO!" shooters will try and steal one ball at a time and backhand shoot it past a guard.
  • The guards will try and block the shot.
  • If a ball makes it past a guard, the guard must retrieve it and put it back in the center hula-hoop.
  • Shooters cannot shoot on the same guard twice.
  • After three minutes, guards and shooters will switch roles.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. A shooter cannot shoot on a goal if the guard has to leave and put a ball back in the center.
Game 2: Shooters can shoot on a goal if a guard has to leave and put a ball back in the center.
Game 3: Increase the number of goals so there are more goals than guards. Shooters can shoot on any goal and guards can move to protect their goals.
Game 4: Keep score. One point is awarded to every goal that is scored.
Exit Ticket: In partners, students backhand shoot off the dribble as they go to put their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Which part of the blade do you use when performing a backhand shot off the dribble?
    • Is the backhand shot off the dribble easy or hard for you and why?

HALF-COURT HOCKEY

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 hockey stick per student
1 Wiffle Ball

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing a Half-Court Hockey. In this game, the objective is to work with your team to backhand shoot off the dribble and score as many goals as possible.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of five – using flags to tell who you are.
  • Each team must split their teammates into offense and defense. Offense must remain on one half of the field and defense must remain on the other. You cannot cross the midline.
  • I will decide which team starts with the ball.
  • When I say, "GO!" the team with the ball will start first.
  • You cannot check, shove or push another teammate.
  • If a ball goes out-of-bounds, the teacher will throw it in.
  • Goalies are not allowed and defending students must remain 3 – 5 feet away from their goal.
  • If a goal is scored, the opposing team starts with the ball at the midline.
  • After 10 minutes, will we rotate teams.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Exit Ticket: In partners, students backhand shoot off the dribble as they go to put their equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students there will be an unequal number of teammates on offense and defense. You must decide which side is more important to have more teammates on.
    • Increase the number of courts based on class size. There should be no more than five students per team.
    • If not all students are participating, enforce a rule stating that teams cannot score unless each teammate received a pass.
