Objective: Jump rope backwards

Jumping Unit | Level 14

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to jump rope backwards.

IMPORTANCE
Jumping rope backwards is important because it helps you to jump in rhythm, which gives you the ability to jump at different speeds and for longer periods of time.

When jumping backwards, it is important to:

1. Hold the handles out to the side of your waist (keep your elbows in).

2. Start with the rope in front of your feet.

3. Turn the rope so it goes over your head. When the rope is behind you, hop over it with both feet.

4. Do a little bounce on the balls of your feet between jumps (this will keep you from stopping between each turn of the rope).

PRACTICE:

  1. I will divide you into teams of two and give each team a jump rope. Find a place on the field for your jump rope station. Ro Sham Bo to decide who starts with the jump rope first. When it is your turn with the jump rope, jump rope backwards as many times as possible without stopping. Each time you go, you have two chances to see how long you can jump.

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game

EQUIPMENT
10 short cones
5 hula-hoops
5 short jump ropes
1 long jump rope

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Jump Rope Stations II. In this game, you will be practicing your jump rope techniques at each of the stations. Your goal is to master jump roping backwards.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, decide which jump rope station you would like to start in – hula-jump, short jump rope, or long jump rope station.
  • Once you decide on a station, pick a partner and Ro Sham Bo to decide who jumps first.
  • In the hula-jump station, spread out and practice jumping backwards through the hula-hoop and bringing it over your head.
  • In the short jump rope station, practice jump roping backwards.
  • In the long jump rope station, I will have two designated rope turners. By yourself or with your partner, you will try to jump the long rope as many times as you can.
  • Switch turns with your partner after 10 tries. Keep track of how many times your partner jumps.
  • You can move from one station to the next based on your comfort level.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Frequently assign new rope turners so everyone may have a turn.
Exit Ticket: Students jump rope backwards all the way back to line up for class. They must make sure they do not run into anyone else.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Remind students, this is not a competition – everyone should focus on their own progress.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Model skills in a small group.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
    • Use standards from previous grade levels to measure growth and progress.
  • Reflection:
    • What was most challenging about jump roping backwards today?
    • What is one important thing to do when you are jump ropoing backwards?
