ROCKET LAUNCH II

Rocket Launch.png

TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 soccer ball per student
10 short cones

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Rocket Launch II. In this game, the objective is to launch a rocket (soccer ball) past the asteroid (defender) by kicking a rocket in the air and landing on your shooting foot, in hopes of landing on a planet (caught by a teammate).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select two rocket launchers.
  • I will select one asteroid.
  • The planets will line up behind the baseline.
  • When I say, “GO!” launch a rocket one at a time to the planets in orbit.
  • If a planet catches a rocket, he/she can join the launchers.
  • Rockets rolled on the ground do not count; they must be kicked in the air.
  • Focus on landing on your shooting foot.
  • If an asteroid blocks a rocket, the rocket is dead.
  • We will begin a new round when there are no more planets left.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add another asteroid.
Game 3: Increase the distance between the rockets and planets.
Exit Ticket: Students land on their shooting foot as they shoot on goal before putting their soccer balls away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Select two capable rocket launchers for the first game.
    • Remind students to be aware of balls being punted around them. Use the term, “Heads up!” to warn students of an incoming ball they do not see.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • If you shoot the ball with your right foot, then you should land on your right foot after the shot. True or False?
    • How could you help a classmate practice their shooting?
