TIME
10-20 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-20 students per game

EQUIPMENT
2 balance beams
24 fuzzy balls
20 short cones
6 beanbags
6 hula-hoops

STORYLINE
Today we are playing All Aboard. Your goal is to work together to keep all the cargo and sailors on the ship (balance beam). Remember to compliment others when you see someone doing a good job.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • Each team will have one captain. Your team will decide who will be the captain. The rest of you will be sailors.
  • As a captain, you are in charge of handing off your team’s cargo to your teammates.
  • When I say, “GO!” the captain will start passing off cargo to the sailors.
  • Sailors must work together to hold onto all of the cargo and stay on the ship.
  • If you fall off your ship, you must get back on.
  • If a piece of cargo drops, the captain must reload it.
  • Each game will get increasingly harder as more cargo is added. New captains will be selected each game.

Game 1: Start with captains adding one fuzzy ball at a time.
Game 2: See how many fuzzy balls a group can hold. What is their record? See if they can beat it.
Game 3: Start adding other items like beanbags, short cones and hoops.
Variation: Add sharks in the water. If a student falls off they become a shark and get to keep any cargo that is dropped in the water.
Exit Ticket: Students share compliments about their fellow classmates.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Safety:
    • Give each student a chance to practice balancing on the beam before starting to the game.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
