TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to move backwards.
IMPORTANCE
Moving backwards is important because the more directions you can move in, the better runner and player you will be.
VOCABULARY
Backwards: the opposite of forward.
When moving backwards, it is important to:
1. Keep your shoulders pointed forward.
2. Look over your shoulder.
3. Move backwards.
PRACTICE
- Line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder. When I say, “GO!” walk backwards to the midline and back while looking over your shoulder so you can see where you are going.
- When I say, “GO!” move faster while going backwards to the midline and back.
CARNIVAL GUMBALLS
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game
EQUIPMENT
1 tall cone per student
4 hula-hoops (red, yellow, blue, green)
20 fuzzy balls (5 red, 5 yellow, 5 blue, 5 green)
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Carnival Gumballs. In this game, you are walking through a carnival in search of gumballs (fuzzy balls). Your goal is to move backwards to fill up your candy jar (upside down tall cone) as fast as you can and transfer it to the candy shop (hula-hoop).
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder with your tall cone in your hand.
- When I say, “GO!” walk backwards through the carnival, picking up one gumball at a time and placing it in your candy jar.
- When your candy jar gets full, drop off the candy in any candy shop.
- We will begin a new game when all the gum balls have made it to the candy shop.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Students have to match the color of the gumball to the same color candy shop (hula-hoop).
Variation: Consider adding a monkey (tagger) who has gotten loose from the Carnival and likes to steal gumballs. If the monkey tags someone, they must return the gumball to the original spot.
Exit Ticket: Students move backwards all the way to the exit location of class.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- Model how to properly walk backwards through the course.
- Safety:
- Remind students they will have to turn their head around to make sure they do not bump into one another.
- ELL Accommodation:
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation:
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Allow students extra time to master the skill.
- Reflection:
- When I move backwards, it is important to...
- Something that was hard for me today was...?
BOOBY TRAP
TIME
10-20 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-20 students per game
EQUIPMENT
20 tall cones
20 short cones
24 fuzzy balls
1 dot per student
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Booby Trap. In this game, you are trying to gather treasure (fuzzy balls) that is being guarded by dangerous booby traps (cones and dots)! Your goal is to gather all the treasure by moving backwards without setting off a trap (touching a cone or dot).
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder.
- When I say, “GO” walk backwards and pick up a piece of treasure.
- If you set off a trap, you must return to the baseline without picking up a piece of treasure. If you are in possession of a piece of treasure when you set off a trap, you must drop it.
- After you pick up a piece of treasure, return it to your dot.
- You can only grab one piece of treasure at a time.
Game 1: Walk backwards.
Game 2: Jog backwards.
Game 3: Add sidestepping defenders- teams can take turns being the defenders. Defenders WALK sideways from one side of the field to the other and back. *NOTE: A defender’s job is just to be an obstacle for students to try to avoid, not to tag or bump into.
Exit Ticket: Students move backwards all the way to the exit location of class.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach:
- When using defenders, make sure to rotate in other groups every few minutes so that everyone has a chance to gather treasure.
- Safety:
- This is not a race. Remind students to turn their head while walking backwards to avoid falling or tripping.

- We will begin a new round when the gopher makes it through the tunnel.
- At the beginning of each round, we will select a new gopher.
