ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Objective: Serve using an overhand pattern over a net to a target

Volleyball Unit | Level 31

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to serve using an overhand pattern over a net to a target.

IMPORTANCE
Serving using an overhand pattern to a target is important because it is how each play begins. Overhand serving to a target gives the ball more power, force and accuracy when hitting over the net.

VOCABULARY
Serve:
the first hit to begin play.
Palm of the hand: the part of the hand between the bases of the fingers and the wrist.
Striking arm: arm that has the hand that contacts the ball.

When serving using an overhand pattern over a net to a target, it is important to:

1. Face your target with your opposite foot forward.

2.png

2. Hold the ball in the palm of your opposite hand at shoulder level.

3.png

3. Toss the ball straight up, slightly above the height of your head.

4.png

4. Step with your front foot and hit the ball with the heel of your palm.

5. Follow through with your striking arm.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. One team will line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder with a ball and the other team will line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the midline. When I say, "GO!" serve the ball aiming towards the midline. After everyone serves, the opposing team will retrieve a ball and serve from the midline.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

WHACK-A-MOLE IV

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 volleyball per 2 students
24 tall cones
5 dots
1 net

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Whack-a-Mole IV. In this game, your objective is to serve using an overhand pattern over a net to whack-a-mole (knock down a tall cone) on the other side.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, stand shoulder-to-shoulder behind the short marker cones with a ball.
  • When I say, “GO!” serve the ball overhand to the other side.
  • After the ball is served, retrieve your ball and try again.
  • If your serve knocks down a cone, move it to the sideline and keep track of how many you knock down.
  • We will begin a new game once all the cones have been knocked down.

Game 1: Play as indicated above and keep score.
Game 2: Change the location of the cones. (Have all the cones bunched together in the middle, make a shape with the cones, put the cones in a border around the outside, etc.)
Variation: To increase difficulty, move the border cones further back.
Variation: To decrease difficulty, have students use beach balls instead of volleyballs.
Exit Ticket: Students overhand serve over the net to the teacher for the teacher to put the equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Depending on class size, divide students into two teams – servers and retrievers. Retrievers stand on the opposite side and roll back balls that have been served.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • What advantage does serving overhand give your team?
    • What goal have you set to improve your overhand serve?

BREAKOUT III

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 volleyball per student
1 net
Optional: 1 beach ball per 2 students
Optional: 5 short cones

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Breakout III. In this game, the objective is to serve using an overhand pattern over a net to a prisoner to help free those still held in the prison (behind the end line).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select two escapees and one prison guard.
  • The rest of you will be prisoners.
  • Before the game begins, prisoners must line up in the prison.
  • When I say, “GO!” the escapees will overhand serve the ball to the prisoners.
  • The prison guards will try and block the serves.
  • Prison guards cannot go into the prison.
  • When a prisoner catches a ball, he/she can join the escapees.
  • We will begin a new game once all the prisoners have been freed.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the amount of prison guards and/or escapees.
Game 3: To increase difficulty, have prisoners kneel or crouch like a frog instead of stand.
Variation: If serving over the net is too difficult, consider using short cones instead.
Exit Ticket: Students overhand serve over the net to the teacher for the teacher to put the equipment away.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • If serving is too difficult, have students move closer to the net.

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
3 volleyballs
10 short cones
1 net
Optional: 3 beach balls

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Newcomb Ball V. In this game, the objective is to work together with your teammates to see how many times you can serve using an overhand pattern over a net to a target and score on the other team.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • Before the game begins, spread out on your side.
  • I will give you a number – this will be the serving order. I will also decide which team serves first.
  • When I say, "GO!" the team that has the ball first will serve overhand.
  • After the ball has been served, you can either hit the ball back or catch the ball.
  • If the ball hits the ground or goes out-of-bounds, the other team gets to serve.
  • You cannot hit the ball twice in a row.
  • We will begin a new game and teams will switch sides once everyone has had a chance to serve.

Game 1: Play as indicated above and keep a rally score.  The first team to earn 11 points wins.
Game 2: If necessary, add more than one volleyball to increase participation.
