Objective: Chest pass

Basketball Unit | Level 7

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to do a chest pass. 

IMPORTANCE
A chest pass is important because it is the fastest way to pass the ball to a teammate.

VOCABULARY
Chest Pass: 
moving the ball from one player to another by throwing the ball from your chest.

When chest passing, it is important to:

1. Hold the ball in front of your chest with both hands.

2. Take a step towards your target when passing.

3. Extend your arms as you pass.

4. Palms and fingers are pointed out after the pass.

 
 

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide you into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the basketball first. Line up on the baseline with your ball between your feet and 3 – 5 feet away from your teammate. When I say, “GO!” chest pass your ball back and forth 10 times.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

QUICKSAND II

TIME

EQUIPMENT
6 hula-hoops
10 basketballs
10 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Quicksand II. In this game, we are caught in quicksand and in need of help! Your goal is to rescue the students stuck in quicksand (hula-hoop) by chest passing a basketball to them.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select two students to stand in the middle island.
  • The rest of you will be stuck in one of the quicksand spots in the desert.   
  • When I say, “GO!” the students in the middle will chest pass the ball to any student stuck in the quicksand.    
  • If you catch a ball, you are free and can join the middle island to help save others.
  • You can only catch a ball while inside the quicksand.
  • You cannot leave your quicksand area.
  • If the ball is not caught, the students in the middle island can retrieve it.  
  • You can only make a chest pass while in the middle island.
  • We will begin a new game once everyone is freed from the quicksand.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: If a ball is thrown and is not caught, it is taken away from the game.
Game 3: Allow students in quicksand to move to other islands. They only have five seconds to find a new hula-hoop when out of the quicksand.
Exit Ticket: Students chest pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • For larger classes, allow students to have one foot inside quicksand and one foot out.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Pair new student with more advanced student of same language for instructions.
    • Post skills and instructions in picture format for students to reference.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Give directions and demonstrations one-on-one or in small groups.
    • Allow students to write, sign, or draw reflections instead of answering orally when appropriate.
  • Reflection:
    • What was the most challenging part about learning to chest pass?
    • How could you help your partner be a better passer?

ALCATRAZ II

TIME

EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per 4 students
10 short cones
1 dot per student

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Alcatraz II. In this game, we are stuck on Alcatraz Island and need to get back to shore! Your goal is to help your team swim back to shore safely by chest passing the buoy (basketball) to your teammate.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of four.
  • Before the game begins, Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the ball first.
  • The rest of you will go out in the ocean with your life raft (dot) set three feet away from each other.  
  • When I say, “GO!” the first student will chest pass the ball to the next student in line.
  • Once you chest pass the ball, you must pick up your life raft and swim (run) to the end of your line.
  • Do not spread out your life rafts too far because if a teammate misses the ball, your team must start back on Alcatraz.
  • See how many chest passes it takes you to get from Alcatraz to the shore.
  • We will begin a new game once all teams have made it to the shore.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the number of teams based on class size.
Exit Ticket: Students chest pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.

    • Demonstrate this game before playing to avoid any confusion.
    • Depending on your class size, you can start with everyone on the same team or two teams.

CATCH THE CLEMENTINES II

15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS

EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per student
10 short cones
4 hula-hoops

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Catch the Clementines II. In this game, you are monkeys trying to collect and store the clementines (basketballs) in your tree house. Your goal is to chest pass as many clementines as possible to the catchers.   

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select four catchers, in charge of catching the clementines and putting them into the tree houses (hula-hoops).
  • The rest of you will be monkeys (runners).
  • When I say, “GO!” the monkeys must:
    • Run to the forest
    • Grab a clementine
    • Run back and chest pass the clementine to any catcher
  • Monkeys must pass the clementines outside of the boundary cones.
  • We will begin a new game when all the clementines are collected and new catchers are selected.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Monkeys can pass clementines to any catchers.
Game 2: Only caught clementines count. If a pass is not caught the clementine must be brought back.
Game 3: Divide students into teams. Monkeys pass clementines to their team catchers.
Exit Ticket: Students chest pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.
