TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to overhead pass.
IMPORTANCE
Overhead passing is important because it is a necessary skill to use when there is a large distance between you and your teammate. Overhead passing allows you to pass the ball over defenders' heads.
VOCABULARY
Overhead Pass: moving the ball from above one players to another player by throwing from over your head.
When overhead passing, it is important to:
1. Hold the ball with both hands.
2. Bring the ball up over your head.
3. Take a step towards your target when passing.
PRACTICE
- I will divide you into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the basketball first. Line up on the baseline with your ball between your feet and 3 – 5 feet between your teammate. When I say, “GO!” overhead pass your ball back and forth 10 times.
- Repeat as many times as needed.
QUICKSAND IV
TIME
15-25 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
12-36 students per game
EQUIPMENT
6 hula-hoops
10 basketballs
10 short cones
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Quicksand IV. Your goal is to overhead pass a basketball to your teammate so they can be rescued from quicksand (hula-hoops).
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will select two students to stand in the middle island.
- I will select two students to be defenders.
- The rest of you will be stuck in one of the quicksand spots in the desert.
- When I say, “GO!” the students in the middle will overhead pass the ball to any student stuck in the quicksand.
- If you catch a ball, you are free and can join the middle island to help save others.
- You can only catch a ball while inside the quicksand.
- You cannot leave your quicksand area.
- If the ball is not caught, you must retrieve it.
- You can only make an overhead pass while in the middle island.
- We will begin a new game once everyone is freed from the quicksand.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the number of defenders based on athletic ability of the class.
Game 3: If a ball is thrown and is not caught, it is taken away from the game.
Game 4: Allow students in quicksand to move to other islands, but they can be tagged by defenders. If they are tagged they become defenders.
Exit Ticket: Students overhead pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach
- For larger classes, allow students to have one foot inside quicksand and one foot out.
- ELL Accommodations
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
- Model skills in a small group.
- Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
- Reflection
- What was most challenging about learning to overhead pass?
- How can you get better at the overhead pass?
CATCH THE CLEMENTINES IV
TIME
15-25 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
2-30 students per game
EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per student
10 short cones
4 hula-hoops
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Catch the Clementines IV. In this game, you are monkeys trying to collect and store as many clementines (basketballs) as possible without getting caught by the zookeeper. Your goal is to overhead pass the clementines to the catchers to store in the tree house.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will select two zookeepers.
- I will select four catchers, in charge of catching the clementines and putting them into the tree houses (hula-hoops).
- The rest of you will be monkeys (runners).
- When I say, “GO!” the monkeys must:
- Run to the forest
- Grab a clementine
- Run back and overhead pass the clementine to any catcher
- Once monkeys are inside the forest they are safe and cannot be tagged.
- If a monkey is tagged by a zookeeper, he/she must go back and get a high-five from a catcher to get back in the game. If a monkey is in possession of a clementine, he/she must return it.
- Monkeys must pass overhead to the catchers outside of the boundary cones.
- Zookeepers cannot cross either side of the boundary cones.
- We will begin a new game when all the clementines are collected and new zookeepers and catchers are selected.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Increase or decrease the number of zookeepers depending on athletic ability of the class.
Exit Ticket: Students overhead pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.

ORANGE SQUEEZE III
TIME
15-25 minutes
NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions
EQUIPMENT
2 long jump ropes
1 basketball per 2 students
5 short cones
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Orange Squeeze III. In this game, we are squeezing the juice out of our oranges (basketballs). Your goal is to see how much juice you can squeeze out of your orange by overhead passing as the juicer grows larger and larger.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into two groups.
- The students at the baseline will start with the orange first.
- When I say, “GO!” overhead pass the orange to the partner across from you.
- If your orange falls into the juicer, quickly retrieve it before it is all squeezed out of orange juice.
- Once the orange is overhead passed through the juicer, the other side gets a chance to overhand pass it.
- The juicer will widen at the beginning of each game.
- You must stay behind the boundary when you are passing or catching.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. Students have to make three overhead passes before widening the juicer.
Game 2: Students have to make five complete overhead passes before widening the juicer.
Game 3: Have students rotate each overhead pass – students at the baseline move either one student to the right or left.
Game 4: Elimination round. If your ball drops in the juicer, you are eliminated. You may practice overhead passing with your partner somewhere in the field.
Exit Ticket: Students overhead pass the ball to the teacher for the teacher to put the ball away.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach
- Let students pass and catch the ball at least three times before widening the juicer.
- ELL Accommodations
- Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
- Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
- SpEd Accommodation
- Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
