Objective: Backhand throw a foam ring for distance

Frisbee Unit | Level 4

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to backhand throw a foam ring for distance.

IMPORTANCE
Backhand throwing a foam ring is important because it is the most commonly used throw in Frisbee. Learning this throwing technique allows you to pass the Frisbee at a greater distance.

VOCABULARY
Backhand:
a throw with the back of the hand facing in the direction of the stroke, typically starting with the arm crossing the body.

When backhand throwing a foam ring for distance, it is important to:

1. Hold the side of the ring with your thumb on top.

2. Stand sideways to your target and bring the ring across your body.

3. Step with your front foot while you throw.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide the class into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will start with the foam ring first. One teammate will stand on the baseline and the other will stand 3 – 5 feet away from him/her. When I say, “GO!” backhand throw and catch the foam ring back and forth.
  2. After 10 throws each, have students take a step backwards.

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
No restrictions

EQUIPMENT
24 tall cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Godzilla. Your goal is to backhand throw a foam ring for distance to try and knock down as many towers (tall cones) as you can on the opposing team’s side.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams.
  • When I say, "GO!" you will try and knock down as many towers as possible by throwing fuzzy balls and/or backhand throwing foam rings.
  • If you knock down a tower on the opposing team's side, you get to bring it back to your side and set it up next to your team’s towers.
  • You can only hold one foam ring or one fuzzy ball at a time.
  • You cannot intentionally block or throw foam rings or fuzzy balls at an opposing teammate.
  • We will begin a new game at the end of five minutes.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Count how many towers are on each side at the end of five minutes.
Exit Ticket: Students throw a foam ring from 20 feet away into the equipment bag to put it away.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into teams of two.
