ASSESSMENT RUBRIC

Objective: Set a self-tossed ball while lying down

Volleyball Unit | Level 16

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to set a self-tossed ball while lying down.

IMPORTANCE
Setting a self-tossed ball while lying down is important because it teaches you how to set the ball properly. Lying down forces you to practice the motion of extending your arms out in front of you.

VOCABULARY
Set:
a passing move in volleyball using fingers (typically the second touch after the ball comes over).

When setting a self-tossed ball while lying down, it is important to:

1.png

1. Extend your arms above your forehead and make a triangle with your hands (hands do not touch).

2.png

2. Contact the ball with your fingertips.

3.png

3. Straighten your arms as you push the ball upwards.

PRACTICE

  1. I will divide students into teams of two. Ro Sham Bo to decide who will go first. Spread out onto the field with the ball. The teammate starting with the ball must lie down on their back. When I say, "GO!" set the ball with both hands without letting it hit the ground. Your teammate will count aloud for you. After you have made five sets, switch roles.
  2. Repeat as many times as needed.

LYING LITTLE CEASARS

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-30 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 beach ball per 4-5 students
24 fuzzy balls
1 short cone per team

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Lying Little Caesars. In this game, you are all chefs trying to cook a delicious pizza pie. Your goal is to set a self-tossed ball while lying down while your teammates find the necessary ingredients (fuzzy balls).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into four teams.
  • Before the game begins, Ro Sham Bo to decide which two teammates will be the Little Caesars and toss the dough first.
  • Everyone else will find the necessary ingredients to make your pizza.
  • When I say, “GO!” the Little Caesars will lie down and set the dough (hit the ball) as many times as possible, while the other teammates run and bring back the ingredients.
  • If the dough falls to the ground at any point, pick it up and continue tossing.
  • We will begin a new game when every group has brought back their ingredients.
  • At the beginning of each game, new Little Caesars will toss the dough.

Game 1: Select one color/ingredient for each team to collect (red-pepperoni, orange-orange pepper, yellow-yellow onions or extra cheese, green-spinach, blue-blue squid, purple- grapes/egg plant). Change the color/ingredient for each team every round.
Game 2: Each teammate must bring back a different color ingredient.
Game 3: Increase the number of dough and Little Caesars.
Variation: To increase difficulty, have students use volleyballs instead of beach balls.
Exit Ticket: Students set a self-tossed ball while lying down as the teacher goes around and collects the equipment.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • Increase or decrease the amount of teams based on class size.
  • ELL Accommodation:
    • Post labeled pictures of skills and game play.
    • Partner with proficient English speakers for directions/modeling and reflections.
  • SpEd Accommodation:
    • Set individual goals for physical or behavioral modifications.
    • Allow students to demonstrate skill one-on-one with teacher.
    • Allow students extra time to master the skill.
  • Reflection:
    • Why did we lay down while setting the ball?
    • What was most challenging about setting the ball?

BEAT THE CLOCK II

TIME
15-25 minutes

NUMBER OF STUDENTS
4-24 students per game

EQUIPMENT
1 beach ball per 2 students
10 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Beat the Clock II. Your goal is to beat the runners time by setting a self-tossed ball while lying down a certain number of times.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two teams - runners and hitters.
  • Before the game begins, runners must line up shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the baseline.
  • Hitters must lie down on their backs.
  • I will select a number at the beginning of each round.
  • Hitters have to toss and set the ball that many number of times.
  • All sets must be counted aloud.
  • When a hitter is done they must stand up.
  • Meanwhile, runners have to sprint to the midline, touch a cone with their hand and sprint back.
  • Runners will try and get back before all hitters make their volleys.
  • At the end of each round, hitters and runners switch.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Keep the number the same for both hitters and runners so they both get a chance.  Start with a low number.
Game 2:  If a ball drops to the ground, the hitter must start over.
Game 3: Runners must run backwards.
Game 4: Runners must run in pairs (holding another teammate’s hand).
Variation: To increase difficulty, have students use volleyballs instead of beach balls.
Exit Ticket: Students set a self-tossed ball while lying down as the teacher goes around and collects the equipment.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach:
    • If setting continuously is too difficult, have students set then catch the beach ball.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide the class into two groups.
  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder in either kitchen.
  • When I say, "GO!" you must scurry across and make it to the opposite kitchen.
  • When you get there, you must:
    • Lie down on your back
    • Toss a bag of flour above your head
    • Set/hit the flour
    • Catch the flour a certain number of times.

  • If the flour leaves the kitchen at any point, you become a chef.
  • We will begin a new game when there is one rat left.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Let students run across without tagging for a couple of rounds.
